POSITION DESCRIPTION

16.1 Volunteer Firefighter

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Volunteer Firefighter reports to the Captain. He/she is not compensated for duties performed in this position, except for training stipends as approved by the Board of Directors. Under direction, the Volunteer Firefighter is responsible for fire suppression activities and care of the sick and injured. He/she assists with the maintenance of apparatus, equipment, buildings and grounds. When assigned, the Volunteer Firefighter drives and safely operates apparatus with due regard for the welfare of the public and department. The Volunteer Firefighter performs related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Ø Performs apparatus inspections ensuring operational readiness at all times.
Ø Responds to fire and emergency incidents, provides emergency medical aid for the sick and injured, and performs fire suppression tasks as directed.
Ø Participates in ongoing, relevant and verifiable training.
Ø Maintains apparatus and equipment in a neat and clean condition.
Ø When qualified, safely drives and operates fire apparatus in routine and emergency situations.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Ø Fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical care principles, practices, techniques, and procedures.
Ø The Incident Command System as adopted by FIRESCOPE.
Ø Laws related to fire protection and prevention.
ØCharacteristics of a wide variety of flammable and hazardous materials.
Ø The principles of hydraulics and mechanical workings of fire apparatus.
Ø Knowledge of district geography, topography, roads, and hydrant system.

Ability To:

Ø Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and orders.
Ø Drive and operate district vehicles and equipment.
Ø Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
Ø Think clearly and act decisively under stress.

Education and Certifications:

Ø Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
Ø California Class B or Firefighter Class B Driver License with Tank, Hazardous Materials, and Air Brake endorsements.

Experience:

Ø One year recent experience as a volunteer firefighter or equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
for appointment to this classification

Education and Certifications:

Ø Graduation from High School or equivalent.
Ø El Dorado County Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Academy or equivalent.

First Responder (medical training).

Ø CPR-C.

Experience:

Ø Recent employment or other experience that demonstrates maturity and the willingness to assume the responsibility required to maintain active status as a Volunteer Firefighter.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

To remain active as a Volunteer Firefighter, individuals accepted into this classification after July 1, 1995 shall:

Ø Reside in the Diamond Springs - El Dorado Fire Protection District or be specifically exempted from that requirement by the Fire Chief in accordance with district policies and procedures.
Ø Maintain First Responder or a higher level of medical certification.
Ø Maintain CPR-C certification or equivalent.
Ø Satisfactorily complete and/or comply with all individual performance standards and Standard Company Evolution's required of Volunteer Firefighters for the duration of active status.
