RESPONSIBILITIES
The Engineer/Mechanic reports to a chief officer designated by the Fire Chief. He/she is responsible for the preventative maintenance and repair of district operated vehicles and motorized equipment. The Engineer/Mechanic is responsible to operate and maintain fire apparatus and all equipment contained thereon at an assigned station. The Engineer/Mechanic shall drive and operate apparatus safely and with due regard for the welfare of the public and department. He/she shall perform fire suppression, emergency medical aid and station maintenance duties. The Engineer/Mechanic performs related duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Ø Performs preventative maintenance
and repairs to all district operated vehicles,
pumps, generators, small engines and other
related equipment.
Ø Ensures the repair of vehicles,
pumps, generators, small engines and other
related equipment that cannot be repaired
in-house.
Ø Manages and conducts annual fire
apparatus pump tests.
Ø Repairs and maintains district
structures and grounds as assigned.
Ø Performs daily apparatus inspections
at assigned station ensuring operational
readiness at all times.
Ø Responds to fire and emergency
incidents, operates apparatus and performs
fire suppression tasks as directed.
Ø Provides emergency medical aid
to the sick and injured.
Ø Plans and provides training for
volunteer and career personnel as directed.
Ø Assumes responsibility for assigned
collateral duties.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Ø Repair and maintenance of -
1. Gasoline and diesel engines.
2. Automatic transmissions for light and heavy vehicles.
3. Fire pumps and related equipment.
4. Truck air brake and passenger vehicle hydraulic brake systems.
5. Vehicle and fire apparatus electrical systems.
6. Vehicle chassis.
Ø Testing equipment used in vehicle
maintenance.
Ø Gas, arc and wirefeed welding.
Ø Basic
aerial apparatus maintenance and minor
repairs.
Ø Fire suppression, rescue and
emergency medical care principles, practices,
techniques, and procedures.
Ø The Incident Command System as
adopted by FIRESCOPE.
Ø Laws related to fire protection,
fire prevention and emergency vehicles.
Ø Characteristics of a wide variety
of flammable and hazardous materials.
Ø The principles of hydraulics
and mechanical workings of fire apparatus.
Ø Knowledge of district geography,
topography, roads, and hydrant system.
Ability To:
Ø Make repairs to fire apparatus,
passenger vehicles and related systems.
Ø Make basic electrical, plumbing
and carpentry repairs.
Ø Work alone without direct supervision.
Ø Understand and follow verbal
and written instructions and orders.
Ø Drive
and operate district vehicles and equipment.
Ø Express ideas clearly and concisely
both orally and in writing.
Ø Maintain accurate maintenance
records.
Ø Establish and maintain an effective
working relationship with employees, representatives
of other agencies, and the public.
Ø Think clearly and act decisively
under stress.
Education and Certifications:
Ø ASE certification.
Ø Driver Operator 1A and 1B.
Ø California State Fire Marshal
Firefighter 1.
Experience:
Ø Two years recent experience as
a heavy equipment (fire apparatus) mechanic.
Ø Thirty months recent experience
as a career firefighter with the Diamond
Springs - El Dorado Fire Protection District,
or five years recent experience as a volunteer
firefighter with the Diamond Springs -
El Dorado Fire Protection District.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
for application to this classification
Education and Certifications:
Ø Graduation from High School or
equivalent.
Ø El Dorado County Volunteer Firefighter
Recruit Academy or equivalent.
Ø Emergency Medical Technician
1.
Ø CPR-C.
Ø California Class B Driver License
with Tank, Hazardous Materials and Air
Brake endorsements.
Ø Hazardous Materials First Responder
Operations.
Experience:
Ø One year recent experience as
a vehicle or heavy equipment mechanic or
equivalent.
Ø Eighteen months recent experience
as a career firefighter, or three years
recent experience as a volunteer firefighter,
or equivalent.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees hired into this classification
after July 1, 1995 shall:
Ø Maintain Emergency Medical Technician
1 certification for the duration of employment.
Ø Maintain CPR-C certification
or equivalent for the duration of employment.
Ø Maintain a valid California Commercial
Class B Driver License with Tank, Hazardous
Materials and Air Brake endorsements for
the duration of employment.
Ø Obtain California Fire Mechanic
I certification within three years of employment,
and maintain that certification for the
duration of employment.
Ø Satisfactorily complete all individual
performance standards and Standard Company
Evolution's required of suppression personnel
for the duration of employment.
