OBJECTIVE Company members will lower a basket stretcher (litter) and single rescuer to a point 75' from an anchor on an apparatus. Company members will then change the lowering system to a mechanical advantage raising system, utilizing a rescue rope system pre-rig. Members will test the system by beginning a haul back maneuver.

Given: An engine equipped with a basket stretcher or Squad 49 shall be used for this evolution. All personnel shall wear full wildland protective clothing.
PROCEDURES
1. Member #2 spots apparatus at least 15' from edge.

2. Member #1 completes size up and transmits a report on conditions.

3. Members #1 and #2 offload the rescue litter and place it in position to be lowered.

4. Member #1 builds a lowering device incorporating a 200' rope, a green web strap, a carabiner, and a friction device anchored to an anchor point on the apparatus. This system is then properly attached to the rescue litter.

5. Member #2 deploys the pre-rigged Z rig, and anchors to a vehicle or suitable anchor point at least 50' away from the apparatus. The anchor will consist of an appropriate length web strap and a carabiner.

6. Member #2 dons a rescue seat, locks into the foot end of the rescue litter, and is lowered by member #1 to a distance of 75' from the apparatus. Member #2 then grounds the litter.

7. Member #1 converts the lowering system to a raising system by first adding a brake (usually a Gibbs ascender) anchored to the same anchor point with a blue web strap. Member #1 then removes the friction device and adds a change of direction pulley.
