OBJECTIVE Three person company will carry, raise, extend, and place a 35' extension ladder against a building at the proper climbing angle.

Given: Company members will perform the evolution in a safe manner on relatively level ground. The ladder will be placed flat (fly up) on the ground not more than 75' from the objective building. Personnel will wear turnout coat, gloves, and structural helmet. Time begins at the command, "Prepare to lift and carry!"
PROCEDURES
1. Members #1 and #2 stand on the right side of the ladder, facing the tip. Member #3 stands on the left side of the ladder, also facing the tip. Member #1 is positioned between the second and third rungs of the ladder butt, and Members #2 and #3 are positioned between the fourth and fifth rungs of the ladder tip. Member #1 gives the command, "Prepare to lift and carry!"

2. Members kneel down next to the ladder with their inside knees touching the ground, and grasp the ladder rail nearest them.

4. Members stand, lifting the weight of the ladder with their legs. The ladder should come up off the ground in one smooth motion. Members bring the ladder to shoulder level and pivot, so that the ladder beam rests on their inside shoulders. Members grasp a rung with their inside arm. Member #3 may have to push up to place weight on Member #2. Members should now be facing the butt of the ladder.

5. Members walk to a spot not more than five feet from the objective building. If the ladder must be brought around in direction while it is being carried, Member #1 will issue the warning, "Ladder coming around!"

10. Members #2 and #3 raise the ladder to a vertical position, moving forward and advancing hand over hand on the rungs and beams. The ladder fly is facing in toward the building.

11. Member #1 places both feet back from the ladder for support and balance. Members #2 and #3 place their outside feet up next to the beam so that the ladder butt is in contact with their insteps and knees. Their other feet are placed back away from the plane of the ladder for proper balance.

12. Member #1 grasps each beam of the ladder bed. Member #2 grasps the left beam of the ladder bed with both hands to steady the ladder. Member #3 grasps the ladder halyard.

13. Member #3 extends the ladder to a height at least three rungs over the roof line by pulling hand over hand on the halyard, making sure that the halyard does not slip through his/her hands. Members #2 and #3 visually check to make sure that both sets of dogs are locked.

14. Members #2 and #3 place their inside feet on the lower rung. They also grasp a rung and beam.
