I. Overview

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) are essential and primary equipment for the fire service. All active suppression personnel are expected to be proficient in their use.

II. Standard

A. The standard method for donning SCBA shall be the over-the head method. Other methods as described by the International Fire Service Training Association are acceptible.

B. All active suppression personnel shall meet a one minute donning standard for SCBA.

III. Procedure

A. To meet this standard, the firefighter shall begin the evolution wearing a turnout coat and fire protective hood.

B. At the end of the maximum one minute donning time, the firefighter shall be breathing air and properly wearing the following:

1. Turnout coat

2. Fire protective hood

3. Structural helmet

4. Structural firefighter gloves

5. Functioning SCBA and face mask

6. Personal Alarm Device set in the "Auto" mode
