The following conditions for signing up for Volunteer Training Shifts shall apply:
1. The Volunteer Training Shift is intended to provide unique training opportunities to volunteer firefighters. This is commonly accomplished by the volunteer gaining career oriented experiences and increased training intensity.
2. Volunteer sign up for shifts shall be on the calendar in the down stairs hallway (Station 49) or in the “entry office at Station 46.” Individuals must write the date of sign up beneath their name in the date block of the calendar. Any sign-up not dated will be removed.
3. Eligible volunteers may sign up for one shift per month up to two months in advance. A shift is defined as a period not exceeding 24 hours.
4. Eligible volunteers may sign up for a second shift in a month, if no one has signed up for that date, two weeks prior to the date to be worked. Approval for a third shift in a month will need to be obtained from The Duty Chief or Operations Chief.
5. Any volunteer signing up to work a shift is responsible for that shift.
6. Volunteers may trade previously assigned shifts under the following conditions:
A. Both volunteers shall agree to the trade at least 72 hours prior to the beginning of a traded shift.
B. Volunteer shift trades shall be in writing, and shall be signed by both parties involved in the trade. The on duty captain shall be advised.
C. Trade documentation shall be forwarded to the Operations Chief's mailbox no less than 72 hours prior to the beginning of the traded shift.
7. Any volunteer firefighter who fails to report for duty without notifying the duty captain, prior to the start of the shift, with a justifiable reason not to work will be suspended from working shifts for three months. Planned shift cancellations must be made no less than two weeks prior to the scheduled shift. Short notice cancellations may be considered justifiable under the following circumstances:
A. Sickness, injury, or sickness in your immediate family
B. Family emergency
C. Hardship cases (granted by a Chief Officer)
8. To be eligible for Volunteer Shifts, Volunteers must meet the following criteria:
A. Completion of six months of service as a Volunteer Firefighter. (Six months post academy)
B. Active status as a Volunteer Firefighter
9. Volunteer Training Shifts will occur in twelve hour blocks from 0730-1930 and 1930 - 0730. The District authorizes forty-eight staff hours for each week on both Engine 49 and 46 (total of 96 hours). The week is defined as starting on Monday at 0730 hours.
