I. Overview

The availability of Medic Units to respond to medical aid requests is a primary goal of this district.

II. Definition

A. Medic 48 - For the purposes of this procedure, Medic 48 when mentioned herein shall also include any other medic unit operated and/or staffed by the Diamond Springs - El Dorado Fire District as a primary response unit.

III. Response

A. Medic 48 shall respond to incidents as dispatched by the dispatch center.

B. Medic 48 shall respond to all incidents in response district 48 when it is available and not on move up standby.

C. Medic 48 may respond to other incidents in the Diamond Springs - El Dorado Fire District when it is in a position to arrive significantly prior to the initially dispatched unit.

D. Medic 48 shall not divert to a fire incident when previously assigned to a medical aid. Medic 48 shall divert from a fire response to a medical response when information regarding the fire response does not involve a medical need.

E. Medic 48 shall respond to any incident within its response area where a reported medical aid exists when it is available and not on move up standby.

F. Medic 48 shall notify the Dispatcher when it is responding to any incident.

IV. Commitment

A. The Incident Commander has the authority to commit a medic unit to any incident, when in the opinion of that Incident Commander, commitment is necessary to resolve a situation which poses a threat to life and property.

B. Medic personnel shall not commit themselves to any incident from which they cannot reasonably break away and respond within one minute unless the medic unit has been committed by the Incident Commander or an immediate threat to life exists.

C. It is the joint responsibility of the medic unit and the Incident Commander to advise the dispatcher when a medic unit has been committed to a non-medical incident.

D. Medic Unit personnel are responsible for establishing communications with the Incident Commander.
