Uniform Specifications
A.
Class A (full dress) Uniform
The Class A uniform is optional for all career personnel and
volunteer personnel.
1.
Shirt
White long sleeve dress
shirt with black uniform tie (no bow or string ties).
2.
Trousers
Navy blue wool or wool blend dress trousers (no stripe down pant
legs).
3.
Jacket
Navy blue wool or wool blend “Ike” style jacket with zipper
front, epaulets, and appropriately colored buttons at epaulet peaks,
pockets, and rear jacket tabs. There shall be a District patch on the
left shoulder, 1” below the seam of the shoulder.
a.
Chief officers’ buttons will be gold in color. Design shall be
crossed bugles appropriate for rank. Sleeve ribbon shall be gold in
color. The rank of Fire Chief shall display five ribbons on each sleeve.
Assistant Fire Chief shall have three ribbons on each sleeve. Battalion
Chief shall have two ribbons on each sleeve.
b.
Captains’ buttons shall be silver in color. Design shall be two
parallel bugles. Sleeve ribbon shall be silver in color. Captains shall
have two ribbons on each sleeve.
c.
All other employee’s buttons shall be silver in color. Design
shall be a steamer or a fire helmet with crossed ladder and tools.
Sleeve ribbon shall be white in color. There shall be one ribbon on each
sleeve.
4.
Belt
a.
Chief Officers - Black basket weave with 1½" gold buckle.
b.
All Others - Black basket weave with 1½" silver buckle.
5.
Footwear
Black dress style uniform shoe. No visible decoration or design.
6.
Cap
a.
Chief Officers - West coast style uniform cap with white top and
black bill. Gold chin strap.
b.
Captains - West coast style uniform cap with white top and black
bill. Silver chin strap.
c.
All other ranks - West coast style uniform cap with navy blue top
and black bill. Black chin strap.

Badge
a.

8.
Cap Badge
a.
Chief Officers – Maltese Cross with eagle over the top. Gold with
blue letters. Letter ribbon over the blue center shall read “Diamond”.
Circular center emblem shall be crossed gold bugles appropriate for rank
with a blue background. Letter ribbon under the blue center shall read
“Springs”.
b.
Captains - Maltese Cross with eagle over the top. Silver with
blue letters. Letter ribbon over the blue center shall read “Diamond”.
Circular center emblem shall be parallel silver bugles with a blue
background. Letter ribbon under the blue center shall read “Springs”.
c.
All others - Maltese Cross with eagle over the top. Silver with
blue letters. Letter ribbon over the blue center shall read “Diamond”.
Circular center emblem shall be a silver steam fire engine with a blue
background. Letter ribbon under the blue center shall read “Springs”.
9.
Collar Brass
a.
Collar brass is to be worn on the jacket lapel only.
b.
Chief Officers – Gold metal open style crossed bugles,
appropriate for the rank.
c.
Captains – Two silver metal open style parallel bugles.
d.
Engineers – Silver ENG insignia.
e.
Firefighters – Silver FF insignia
10.
Name Tags
a.
Chief Officers - Gold metal 2¼" in length, blue letters.
b.
All Others - Silver 2¼" in length, blue letters.
c.
Name tags shall be worn centered over the right chest pocket on
the uniform shirt.
d.
All name tags may include either “Emergency Medical Technician”
or “Paramedic” as appropriate to the individuals certification level.
B.
Class B (dress) Uniform
1.
Shirt
a.
Chief Officers
i.
White (Flying Cross or equivalent) short
or long sleeve with epaulets. Long sleeve must be worn with a black tie
(fore in hand). White shirt
standard is appropriate for presentations, meetings and administrative
duties.
ii.
Navy blue (Flying Cross or equivalent)
Short or long sleeve with epaulettes.
Chief officers may utilize the dark blue shirt standard while on
duty or committed to operations where a white shirt is likely to become
soiled.
b.
All Others - Dark Blue (Flying Cross or equivalent) short or long
sleeve with epaulets and white buttons.
c.
100% cotton department or white T-shirt may be worn under the
dress shirt. Long sleeve T-shirts shall not be worn with short sleeve
dress shirts.
d.
Uniform shirt shall have the District patch sewn on the left
sleeve approximately 1" below the shoulder seam.
e.
Officers are authorized to wear a uniform Polo style shirt.
The color shall be consistent with the rank of the officer.
An approved District logo shall be displayed.
This standard is appropriate for off duty wear, after hours and
informal meetings.
2.
Trousers
a.
All Personnel navy blue uniform type (no cords or denim).
Trousers must be made of a flame resistant material that meets CalOSHA
specifications (Nomex, Flamex, Wool, etc.).
b.
Volunteer and off duty personnel may wear non-fire resistant
material uniform pants to functions, however, they will not be permitted
to answer any fire-related alarms while wearing them unless they are in
full turnouts. Trousers made of 100% cotton are acceptable to wear under
any issued protective clothing.
3.
Belt
a.
Chief Officers - Black basket weave with 1½" gold buckle.
b.
All Others - Black basket weave with 1½" silver buckle. Other
buckles may be approved by the Chief.
4.
Footwear
a.
Chief Officers - Black plain toe shoes, boots or footwear as
outlined in items “c” or “d” below.
b.
Office Personnel - Black or dark blue with dark socks.
c.
All Others - Black boots that meet CalOSHA specifications for
structural firefighter footwear.
d.
Alternate Duty Footwear - Heavy duty lace-type boot. Boots
manufactured by Buffalo, Danner, Red Wing, Westco, White’s or other
manufacturer specifically approved by the Chief or Assistant Chief shall
be the only boots acceptable as an alternative duty boot. Boots must
have non-slip soles and heels (Vibram lug or similar) and ankle support
with leather tops not less than eight (8) inches in height measured
from the bottom of the shoe heel. Alternate duty boots shall be
black in color and capable of accepting a shine.
5.
Coat
a.
All Personnel Uniform coat, waist or thigh length, modern Goretex
or water repellent fabric, dark blue or black
e.g. Carhartt Acadia or similar (as approved).
b.
Navy blue (Lion medium weight or equivalent) with District patch
sewn on the left sleeve approximately 1" below the shoulder seam.
c.
Black or blue, waist length, fleece / micro fleece material coat
or jacket e.g. Mountain Hardware Windstpopper Tech #OM3780.

jackets shall have a District patch or approved District embroidery as
identification.

Badge

C.
Class C (duty) Uniform
1.
Shirt
a.
Chief Officers - 100% cotton T-shirt in white or navy blue. May
be long or short sleeve. Shirt to have District logo on left breast.
Logo on back is optional.
b.
All Others - 100% cotton T-shirt in navy blue. May be long or
short sleeve. Shirt to have District logo on left breast and on back.
Any employee serving on the medic unit shall wear a shirt that
designates their level of medical certification in some manner, such as
the word “Paramedic” immediately below the district logo.
c.
Dress uniform shirt is optional.
d.
Navy blue sweat shirts may be worn over duty shirt during cool
weather. Sweat shirts must have the District logo on the left breast and
on the back. Sweat shirts shall not be worn to incidents where full,
minimum, or wildland protective clothing are required.
i.
Job shirts, navy blue, with the District
approved, embroidered logo are permitted in this class.
ii.
“Quarter zip”or “crew” type shirts may be
utilized in this class.
2.
Trousers
a.
All Career Personnel and Volunteer Personnel working Volunteer
shifts - navy blue uniform type (no cords or denim). Trousers must be
made of a flame resistant material that meets CalOSHA specifications
(Nomex, Flamex, Wool, etc.).
b.
Personnel not actively on duty or personnel being called back to
duty under exigent circumstances may wear a durable natural fiber, full
length trouser. Personnel
must wear other protective clothing over them as appropriate to the
incident type according to SOP #301 when operating at incidents.
3.
Belt
a.
Chief Officers - Black basket weave with 1½" gold buckle.
b.
All Others - Black basket weave with 1½" silver buckle. Other
buckles may be approved by the Chief.
4.
Footwear
a.
Chief Officers - Black plain toe shoes, boots or footwear as
outlined in items “c” or “d” below.
b.
Office Personnel - Black or dark blue with dark socks.
c.
All Others - Black boots that meet CalOSHA specifications for
structural firefighter footwear.
d.
Alternate Duty Footwear - Heavy duty lace-type boot. Boots

5.
Coat
All Personnel - Navy blue
solid colored. Must be marked the approved District logo or patch.
6.
Caps/Hats
A Navy blue District
baseball cap a wool or similar
synthetic watch cap or a military type navy blue “boonie” hat may
be worn. Cap must be marked with an approved District logo or patch.
All caps are to be of a solid
navy blue color with a solid color brim.

7.
Special Wear
Personnel may utilize a
canvas coverall or jump suit.
Camel, black and dark blue colors are acceptable for this
standard. Personnel are
authorized to utilize this standard during construction projects,
special rescue operations or operations where Class C uniforms will
likely be damaged. Standard
Operating Procedure #301 will prevail in fire and specific IDLH
environments.
8.
Coveralls
Coveralls are intended to
wear over the duty uniform to keep it clean. They are not to be worn to
incidents. Coveralls shall be navy blue.
9.
Additional uniform apparel may be approved by the Chief due to
inclement weather or special duty assignment.
II.
General Rules
A.
The Class A uniform shall be worn, when available, at all formal
District functions such as award ceremonies and funerals, etc.
B.
The Class B uniform shall be worn on public district business
such as inspections and school or public presentations. It shall be the
normal uniform for chief officers.
B.
The Class C (duty) uniform applies to all personnel while
representing the District. Personnel driving District apparatus
(engines, truck, water tender, medic unit) on planned events (drills,
training burns, etc.) shall wear a duty uniform. Exception: Wildland or
structural firefighters' pants may be worn in lieu of uniform pants
while driving District apparatus.
C.
Duty uniforms need not be worn when the type of work being done
requires different apparel.
D.
Volunteer personnel shall provide themselves with duty uniforms
at district expense by the end of their probation. Dress uniform items
shall not be purchased by the district until the volunteer successfully
completes probation.
E.
Career personnel shall provide themselves with regulation
uniforms, except the Class A uniform, within the first week of hire.
F.
Personnel receiving promotion to a new classification shall
provide themselves with regulation uniforms by the effective date of
promotion.
G.
When the uniform is worn, it shall be in unsoiled condition,
completely buttoned and unwrinkled. No lodge pins, medals, badges or
decorations shall be worn other than those permitted by the Chief or
required by uniform regulations.
H.
Any custom uniform work must be approved by the Fire Chief.
